Impressive that a restaurant in New York would attract such accolades and be so incredibly disappointing, touting variety and a long history of great service, Vatan is for those who have no understanding or appreciation for quality cuisine, have no capability to distinguish fine Indian flavors and for vegetarians that would rather be impressed by volume and disregard quality.
Do not take your children, the menu is fixed and uncompromising on head count, and does not offer anything that a parent would be satisfied with, so get a baby sitter if you must go. The service is polite, stubborn and uncomfortably forceful making the surcharge painful to part with. The food was flavorless from the potato fritters, bland sev puri, tasteless chick peas to the selection of unimpressive and stale mains and the cheap ice-cream desert that had no relevance and that no child would eat.
The Indian patronage should be ashamed to assault their heritage of taste buds to such average food. New York boasts some of the best selections of Indian cuisine at better prices, service, quality and variety.
Strike this from your list if you enjoy Indian food and have a discerning wallet.

Amazing! The food was delicious and plentiful. The atmosphere - the cushoned seats, the cloud-painted ceiling, the tree in the middle of the restaurant, the open, airy feeling - was relaxing and amazing. The service was absolutely the best! It's worth a trip to NYC just to dine at this restaurant!

The food is really really good and quite authentic in its taste compared to most Indian restaurants in the NY Metro area.
The service is very friendly. A definite thumbs up!

Please note that this is not just an "Indian" Restaurant. It is an Indian Restaurant that serves Gujerati Cuisine. This means it is all vegetarian and very unlike the vegetarian food found in most typical Indian places which tend to have Punjabi cuisine or like South Indian places with Dosas and such. The menu is fixed, the food is plentiful with a large variety, it is all freshly prepared from scratch every day which is why it is open for Dinner only. The place is owned and run by women only. There is only one male around and he is one of the waiters. The ambience is unique and nothing like one experiences anywhere else. The service is superb. Lighten up a little, take off your shoes at the door and sit in one of the raised booths cross legged. The only choices you have to make are what drink you want and the degree of heat in your main entree. All this for less than $25.00 (plus drinks). Where in Manhattan can you get a feast for less than 3 times this? I have been there twice...the food is authentic as evidenced by large number of Gujeratis who go there (Patels, Shahs etc)

A great ambience and you get a lot of food. The food is not that great, but the price is worth for the ambience.

Everytime someone visits me from out of town, I take them here. It's hands-down my favortie restaurant in New York, with a great all-you-can-eat prix-fixe menu for $25. Beautiful, serene setting.

My girlfriend and I are very fond of Indian food, and make a point to visit as many different Indian restaurants as we can in New York City and Boston. This was one of the best. Great decor, unique feel, and excellent food. You get to try a little of everything, and as much of anything as you like, for a very reasonable price.
