Burma shares borders with Bangladesh, India, China, Laos, and Thailand in Southeast Asia, therefore its cuisine is invariably influenced by these surrounding cultural spices, seasonings, ingredients, and cooking styles. However, the combination of the ingredients of Burmese cuisine and the cooking styles are also what makes Burmese dishes unique. Burmese curries have well seasoned gravy thicker than Thai's and lighter on spices than the Indian counterparts.
The majority of the Burmese diet consists of rice, served with meat and/or fish, as well as soups, salads and a variety of vegetables. It is customary for all dishes to be presented on the table simultaneously, allowing diners the freedom to make their own choices and enjoy the meal in family style. Burmese cuisine promotes healthful benefits as vegetarian dishes are part of the Burmese culture, without using dairy products or MSG.
