Italian Food & Culture History

Restaurant Description

Making History, Then and Now. Originally from New York, Frank "Papa" Azzarelli began his career as an architect for the Brooklyn Bridge, but he also had a deep passion for cooking - a passion that would become part of Houston history.

On April 17th 1945, Frank Azzarelli made Bayou City history by opening up Houston's first and only Italian restaurant - Azzarelli's Spaghetti House - on old Post Oak Road.

Serving up traditional Italian food favorites, the restaurant became an immediate hit with locals eager for authentic Italian cooking - and was even frequented by some of the world's biggest celebrities of the time, including Bob Hope and Marilyn Monroe.

In 1998, history was made again when critically-acclaimed chef, Frank Triola (grandson to Frank Azzarelli), resurrected the legendary Azzarelli's. From 1998 to 2001, Triola successfully owned and operated Azzarelli's on Eldridge Parkway receiving many awards and accolades for his food, including 21 media write-ups. In the past few years, Azzarelli's has been thriving in its new location on Memorial Drive. Chef Triola has been wowing his new clientele, including the Houston Rockets, Plex athletes, and other Houston locals, with Traditional Italian, New American and Southwestern inspired menu items.

Want a taste of Azzarelli's past glory? Try Papa Azzarelli's Mushrooms - filled with veal and breadcrumbs, topped with Fontina cheese and finished with lemon-butter basil sauce - they're just like the ones Papa use to make.
