The Cloverleaf operated as a man's bar until a dining room was added in 1976. The growth of the Cloverleaf was slow due to the image of "a man's bar." However, once it was proclaimed Caldwell's best kept secret in 1983, the tavern experienced rapid & constant growth.
The restaurant earned the Reader's choice Award from Jersey Monthly for the "Best Lunch in Northern New Jersey." It earned an additional award for "The Best Inexpensive Restaurant in Northern New Jersey" the following year. An award for "Culinary Excellence" was also given to the Tavern at Great Chief's Night, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Fairfield New Jersey.
