I have been eating at Midtown Cafe for years (10+), and I have to say I do not agree with the first review. I love their breakfast, lunch and desert menus and have never felt disappointed when leaving. Even though I have moved away from NC, every time I visit family in Winston, Midtown is the one place I try to stop in for a meal. They have excellent pancakes, waffles, hashbrowns and the list goes on for breakfast. For lunch their chicken salad is always tasty and they have burgers and other sandwiches for all tastes. Also if you are looking for a great desert try their Italian Cream or Hummingbird cake! I feel that your experience at different restaurants have to do with your attitude as well. If reviewer number one feels like the staff was not friendly it might be because she was not friendly herself. Also I have never gone in there because I wanted the prestige of eating at a nice restaurant nor do I think of myself better than everyone else around for eating there. I go there because my friends, family and I enjoy their food. The quality, taste, and quantity of their food is worth the extra couple of bucks.

Midtown Cafe and Dessertery is just not my cup of tea. The breakfast menu is inviting to read (see the nice crepe picture) and tastes just fine but I just can't get over the lack of warmth that emanates from the whole experience. It's downright sterile. This is not our first experience here, in fact, it's about our third or fourth. Each time I try to focus on the family being together or the treat of not having to cook at home but I still can't deny the subtle but undeniable fact that this restaurant leaves something to be desired. The hostess is not personable and the wait staff has been cordial but detached. It's not like I expect the waiter to become our new best friend or anything but some personality, please! My husband says it's like a small town restaurant trying to be upper class just by acting snobby. Well, I don't know if that's the case but I think he's on to something. If the prices are high enough and the people put on airs enough does that magically make a restaurant haute or just haughty? If you have extra cash lying around to spend on a too expensive breakfast and you get a thrill from feeling like you must be better than everyone else just because your eating at the Midtown Cafe and Dessertery, than head on over tomorrow morning.

Great breakfast place. They serve breakfast all day. We enjoyed crepes, waffles, and pigs in blankets. It's not cheap but really worth it for those special breakfasts. We will return again.
