The beautiful building known as John Hagan's Tavern was built in 1790 to serve as a public house for travelers on The Olde National Pike, which was the main thoroughfare between Baltimore and Cumberland and from there, the frontier. Hagan's was one of many taverns on the pike, but kept a reputation for having the best food, thereby attracting gentry as well as drovers.

Stories & Legends

John Hagan's Tavern also earned a certain notoriety due to several unsolved mysteries involving buried treasure, murder, and ghostly sightings. Their guest list has included President George Washington, Vice-President John C. Calhoun, President Andrew Johnson, as well as Henry Clay. Through the years the Tavern has served varied roles: private home, resort, restaurant, tavern, inn, and, for a period in the 1930's, a speakeasy. Hagan's Tavern has also served as a headquarters for soldiers and officers from both armies during the Civil War. There are stories of buried treasure on one of the nearby mountainsides.

The Tavern Today

The Beautiful building today is now the home of The Silver Maple Restaurant & Wine Bar. With the building still upholding its reputation for having the finest food and drinks in the area. Two of the dining rooms painted by local artist Va. Jacobs McLaughlin creates a warm & romantic atmosphere for our guest. The Restaurant today is the perfect atmosphere for parties of any occasion.
