I don't know what that recent reviewer said or did, but I wouldn't call the owners at Al's Deli rude. I'd call them some of the best professionals in the business anywhere. This is old world--classic deli that could make it in any French arrondissmont. If you go in there looking for a classic italian sub or a grilled cheese with a coke to go you're in the wrong place. Have what they serve, learn the drill at the counter, and you'll enjoy yourself. Rollin' in the Dough next door is a perfect rip-off place to get that mediocre italian sub or a million other over-priced things you wait a half-hour for.

The food is just fine but the owner is VERY rude. Don't try and call ahead as he will hang up on you mid-sentence utterring that his hole-in-the-wall deli leaves him "too busy" to answer questions. I would wholly recommend rollin'2go (next door) for similar quality but MUCH better service.
I have not had the same experiences the other diners did. This family restaurant has been open since the 1970's. The basement location is kind of odd, however I'm sure that is how they keep their menu prices down by being in the lower rent zone. I

Nothing exceptional at this restaurant. Food was average for this area but i would say that it is over-priced. I expected the food to be hot and not simply tepid. I have had better meals at Evanston Hospital where dinners are served on hot plates, no

ONE OF THE BEST DELI'S ON THE NORTH SHORE. Old school deli ambiance, run by brothers, with the quality firmly on the food. Great bread, fresh meats, unique drinks, a fine assortment of homemade pastas, potato salads, and the best rice pudding in the area. Turkey on croissant with a bernaise sauce and the house special (baked ham on rye) are the highlights. Get there before the lunch rush -- this hole-in-the-wall building seats about 10 people, and on a busy winter day you don't want to be the guy out the door at the back of the line. worth the wait, though
