There is something to this place because no matter how far away you move, you miss their bbq tremendously. I absolutely love the Hash too and it's the only place you can find it. I live in Alabama now and there is nobody else like Ward's! And if you ask about Hash down here, it confuses people, they have no clue and no idea what they are missing out on. My husband and I also get family members coming to visit to bring us extras to freeze or when we visit there we stock up. It's great food but does spoil all other bbq for you. Oh the pain to such sinfully delicious food! I was actually online searching for recipes that maybe even came remotely close to theirs, that's when I found this site, and just had to express my love for that restaurant.
we use to live in sumter and would take bar b que with us to delaware - now we live in augusta ga and i am still going to sumter to get bar b que for the sisters to take to delaware and pennsylvania - all employees are so nice and helpful - i only ne

I just LOVE this place. I moved from Sumter S.C. in 1990, to Oklahoma City. There is no where here that even comes close to Ward's bbq, hash and rice. All of it is just GREAT. I eat there when I go home, but that,s not often enough. I wish they would

I moved away from Sumter in 1981 and the only thing I miss is Wards. I've had my sister bring some to me once on the plane, but I would be in heaven if they would ship their products. After all these years, it is still the BEST bbq I have ever had and have found nothing to compare in Denver or Seattle (where I've lived). Once you taste Ward's, you're spoiled for life.

Wards is the best you will find. There cole slaw is too die for, as well as there hash and rice. Have been eating there for 15 years and everytime I am back in Sumter I get extras to take home. Wishing they would start sending it frozen...

The best barbeque in the U.S. The main store is just a little "hole in the wall" where most of the business is take out. They also have a nice small resturant on the west side of town. The barbeque is fabulous, along with rice and "hash" and great hush puppies. Everytime I go to SC I make a trip to Sumter for this.
