When most people think of Southern California, their minds typically jump to scenes of beautiful beaches, palm trees, and breathtaking sunsets along the coast. But there's also plenty to enjoy when you travel a short distance inland to the city of Riverside. A warm, dry climate has attracted vacationers to Riverside for well over a century. An economic and visual attraction here has been navel orange groves, a fruit that was introduced here in the late 19th Century. That led to the citrus industry becoming a major component of the California economy. By the 1880s, more than 500,000 citrus trees were planted in California, and nearly half of them were in Riverside. You can learn more about the city's role in the citrus industry through landscapes and exhibits at the California Citrus State Historic Park, as well as at restored packing houses. There's other historical points of interest you'll want to take note of here as well. For instance, the first showing of the classic film “Gone With the Wind” was at the Fox Theater in Riverside. Along with history, Riverside has plenty of exciting activities the entire family will appreciate. Castle Park and nearby Pharaoh's Lost Kingdom are popular amusement parks for those with children. There also are more than 20 museums and galleries in Riverside, including the UCR Museum of Photography, Riverside Art Museum, Mission Inn Museum, and the Orange Empire Railway Museum. You'll want to enjoy the weather outside, so take advantage of several golf courses here. Also, the city's proximity to mountains means there's lots of hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities to enjoy.
