My husband and I dined at Sardine's this past Saturday evening. I have read many not-so-great reviews of this place, and we are both astounded by those. Maybe those reviewers didn't get the right waiter. We have dined here for many years, and always either ask for, or are lucky enough to get, Mark as a waiter. We are very low key, we come for the food, great service (when we get this charmer!), and lovely music. Mark seems to have a sixth sense with his tables. I was a Food and Beverage Director for a large hotel chain for many years before my retirement, and I enjoy watching staff go about the business of taking care of guests. Mark is a pleasure to watch, and he is a joy to have as a waiter. Why he hasn't been snapped up by The French Room or Del Frisco's (though their service has slid a tad) is beyond me. His wine and menu knowledge is excellent, he is not overly chatty, he does not rush around, even when the restaurant is busy, yet we never have to wait for refills, courses, etc. Very, very smooth guy. Cannot really comment on the rest of the waitstaff, though they appear well-intentioned. Oh, btw, the food is consistently good, and the portions are large. Wine list is good, though a little small.

My last visit there tonight, the evening of May 9, 2009 a was a particularly bad experience. My wife and I arrived early in the evening at approximately 6 PM. The restaurant was at less than 25% capacity. Tonight marked our 12th wedding anniversary.

After we ate our appetizers and awaited our dinners to be served, and while we were enjoying our mixed drinks, a young man, seemingly in charge of Sardines this evening, approached our table with a hostess lady. The woman came to the table, handed my wife her bag and proceeded to remove the table telling my wife that they needed it. The young man stated that “We are overbooked and have a party coming and need this table. You are OK with this?” I told him I was not, and it went totally downhill from there. He implied that I would have to be OK with it and kept trying to get me to agree it was fine to burden us with his poor scheduling problems. What I feel I was a victim of was a lazy effort to find a table to use from among the many other empty ones there, and some good old fashion rudeness to what might have first been thought an easy to push around elderly couple.
