Mexican Food & Culture History

Restaurant Description

The restaurant began as Earl's in the 1960s at 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road and was family owned and operated. It began as an American diner, and the dishwasher was the inspiration for the authentic Mexican recipes that are still used today. The most familiar location was at 99th and Peoria avenues, but when wait lines were 45 minutes to get a seat, expansion plans were put into play, and the restaurant has been at 9440 W. Peoria Ave. since the early 1990s. After a brief change of ownership, Earl's went away (Azul's), only to ultimately be reborn as Crazy Earl's, under the new ownership of Andrea Ramsey.Ramsey has nine years of previous restaurant experience and was the former owner of Crazy Jim's at 15th Avenue and Indian School Road, which is the inspiration for the Greek and pizza offerings. It has been Andrea's main focus to bring back the atmosphere and flavor of Earl's with a new twist of Greek and hint of Italian foods, with the emphasis on the Original Earl's recipes and favorite Mexican and American dishes. In an effort to keep the atmosphere fresh, Saul Salinas has joined forces with Ramsey as of November 2009. Salinas brings with him previous restaurant ownership experience as well as his concept of 'The Iron Bar' which the lounge will be referred as. Saul will put his own custom iron work decor as finishing touches when the renovation is complete. Watch for exciting changes, specials, and concepts in the coming months! Quality of food, excellent customer service and full satisfaction are always the top priority! The restaurant offers two private rooms, one which can accommodate parties of 50 and the other can accommodate parties of 125 and can be reserved in advance. Reservations may be made for one-time or recurring events.Catering, banquets, buffets - any accommodation is welcome - we strive to be a destination!

Wow, changes can be good. I have not eaten here in awhile, but drove by, saw it was changed. Place has had a facelift for the better. And the food, WOW. Salad was made FRESH and you could taste the difference in fresh salad. Dinner was fantastic, and the staff seemed to brighten up the place. It was a great experience, thanks for the rennovation, and keep up the good work!!!

This is a very family friendly, quiet restaurant and great value for your money. Go there and enjoy the food and people. You will be happy in knowing that you are supporting a nice little restaurant.

Several of us visited, several times to survey this restaurant for a meeting place in this upcoming year. They did not know this until I took an agreement document to them after our 2nd visit. Each of us ordered different items each time & they were abolutely delicious. The management is very friendly, prompt & assists the waitress's whenever needed. A friendly, agreeable dining area for the Sun City's area. It was also impeccably clean. We are looking forward to our next mtg. year at Azul.

Our first visit to Azul yesterday (5-23-08) was quite a pleasant dining experience.

Formerly Earl's, Azul has been redecorated and the new interior paint colors are bold and add to the ambiance. The wait station in the dining room has been screened from customer's view - something Earl's never figured out but is so much appreciated by diners.

Chips and salsa were brought to our table almost before we sat down. The chips were thin, warm and crisp and the salsa mild enough for our 84 years young Sun City dining companion to enjoy.

We ordered a couple of margaritas on-the-rocks, which were a bit sweet, but for only 99 cents each one really can't complain too much.

We sampled the green chili burrito, shredded beef burrito and 1/3 pound Angus Beef hamburger.

The green chili pork was tender, juicy and very well seasoned. I'm a chili-head and really like things hot and spicy, difficult to find anywhere near Sun City, so I appreciate the balance of flavors, spice and heat in this burro.

My wife said her shredded beef burrito was so good it reminded her of Rosa's Restaurant in Mesa so I had to take a bite. Excellent flavor, tender shreds of beef, red chili flavor redolent throughout. I wanted more but she wouldn't share.

The Angus Beef burger was cooked perfectly to order and served with freshly cooked fries - other sides are available. Lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayo, mustard and other condiments were, as ordered, on the side.

We selected draft beer to enjoy with our meal and were pleasantly surprised to discover Azul offering Blue Moon, Dos Equis, Fat Tire and many more draft beers at only 99 cents.

The cost of three meals, 2 margaritas and 2 draft beers was $24 and since the service was excellent and very attentive a $6 tip was added bringing the total price to $30.

Azul, great job and we will be back soon and often.

Have been going to Earl's for six years, and enjoyed it very much. Excellent food at a very reasonable price. Haven't tried it since they've changed hands, but will tonight with fish fries. :) Earl's is only 1/2 mile from our house so, it's very convenient. Everything we've eaten at Earl's has been excellent. Breakfast, lunch and dinners! :) Barb G.
